Sadqay Tumhare : What a Finale!

It's rare that I watch the last episode of a drama twice in a row.  Such was the effect the finale of Sadqay Tumhare had on me.  Why?  Well, to be honest, it was because I initially couldn't make sense of the ending OR of my feelings towards it!

I apologize for throwing Bollywood in here, but when the movie "Rockstar" released, I watched it in theaters.  After walking out of the theater, I couldn't answer when asked what I thought about the movie.  I wasn't sure.  However, as the days progressed, with each day, I found the movie more amazing as new aspects of the movie struck me.  I couldn't put into words what I felt after watching the movie, because at the time, I felt nothing.  But new emotions hit me over and over again over the days following the viewing.

Such is how I feel about the Sadqay Tumhare finale.  After the first viewing, I was confused and was left thinking "What?  That's it?  What the hell was the point of that show exactly?  What am I supposed to take away from all of this?!"  The confusion led me to watch the episode again immediately, after which an odd feeling of beauty and bewilderment hit me.

And now here I am, trying to put into words yet again what I felt about the finale, which is somehow becoming more and more incredible as time passes.

As the episode began, we witnessed Inayat's grief at how her mistakes in the past were now coming to haunt (and destroy) her son's future.  I found myself crying with her as Khalil tried to console her, telling her that he would forget Shano eventually, a lie that neither Inayat nor the audience could believe.  Unable to handle the grief, Inayat passed away shortly after, unable to look Khalil in the eye and see the pain she felt she was responsible for.

Humaira and Shano discussed Humaira's actions and Shano, being the ever-loving friend and ever-trusting lover, told Humaira that she did not mind her falling in love with Khalil, nor could she ever suspect Khalil of betrayal.  She states that he proved that he's not his father's son.  In that moment, I thought "Well, he proved he's Abdur Rahman's son.  A stand-up guy, loyal to the end."

In the forthcoming scenes, we were given "jhatka after jhatka,"  presented in the form of Khalil's interview, many years later after he has achieved success in life.

We find out that Khalil got married.  We find out that years later, Shano also got married.  And then we get the biggest jhatka......a few years after her marriage, Shano died.

Khalil went to her janaaza, but did not make it in time, unable to see Shano's face one last time.  And of course, Shano's cause of death was her forever broken heart, suffering in her distance from Khalil.  Rasheeda ultimately lost her lover, her husband (still alive, but not quite) and her daughter, leaving her the ultimate loser in the whole situation.  In the last scene, we see Khalil meeting Shano's son, who she named Khurram - the name Khalil wanted to name his and Shano's son.  "Kh se Khurram, Re se Rukhsana aur Meem se Mohabbat.".....and the end.

There are several thoughts I have looming in my head after this finale.

  • Tahira Imam as Inayat deserves immense credit for her breakdown scene after leaving Rasheeda's home, realizing that the past does ultimately affect the future.  Her acting was incredible.
  • "Mohabbat ki tasneem ho gayi, kabar ban gayi" says Khalil when describing his feelings after hearing of Shano's marriage - but what hypocrisy (as aptly pointed out by the reporter), as he had gotten married as well 6 years earlier than she did.  Was this to show the male dominant society mind-set?  Khalil could move on despite his declarations of love, but Shano was supposed to wait forever....for something she knew would never happen?
  • What made Shano's demise even more painful and the news of her death equally as sudden to the audience as it was for Khalil was that our final glimpse of Shano in the "present" was in her scene with Humaira.  After that, we witness everything from Khalil's point of view.  This decision by the director was highly effective, making the viewer miss Mahira's presence before even realizing Shano's outcome.
  • A scene that really struck me was when Khalil was leaving Shano's home and Amin (Shano's father) stops him and says "Mujhe maaf karna."  What a heart-breaking thought that Shano sacrificed her love and happiness entirely for her father.....and he outlived her.  That's a pain that no parent should have to live through, outliving their children.
  • Rasheeda was ultimately the one who was left empty-handed.  Her selfish behavior towards everyone around her, drowning in spite and revenge, left her with nothing.  She lost her lover, she lost her husband's respect and she destroyed her daughter.
In closing, I think what most irked me about this last episode and also left me in complete awe at its ironic beauty is that the ending was realistic.  This was something that would happen in REAL LIFE.  Why that can sometimes be hard to digest when watching a show, I don't know, but I just don't think that's what was expected from the ending of this show.  Now thinking back, when it was told that Sadqay Tumhare was based on a true story, I now completely believe it.

"Khurram.  Kh se Khalil, Re se Rukhsana aur Meem se Mohabbat."

What started off as a beautiful love story turned into a family drama, lost the plot somewhere in the middle and somehow, with the last episode, managed to make a huge impact, cementing its place as a drama to be remembered in 2015.  The show wasn't perfect, but it definitely was beautiful and, ultimately, deep.  A huge round of applause for the entire cast and crew of Sadqay Tumhare.

  1. Although it was one of the best dramas we've had in 2015 so far, I am very disappointed that this drama got more attention than the one I think actually deserved it. I think the acting skills Ayesha Khan and Zahid Ahmed displayed in Mehram were more worthy of the Hum Awards, yet Sadqay Tumhare got a lot more attention and Zahid wasn't even nominated! Adnan Malik only portrayed a spoilt brat that was angry all the time and calmed down a little when he fell in love. Zahid went from a young, carefree college student to a serious man who lost his brother and mother on the same day, forever changing him. Why was he not nominated?
    Rant over. :)

    1. So here's my opinion on that and it may not be the same. Haha.

I thought Sadqay Tumhare was a great show and showed a lot of range from Adnan Maik. It was a great show with a solid love story, which is what really brought in the audience. It had a ton of grey characters, everyone with a lot of history and a lot of depth. Flaws were present in each character and were displayed realistically. For example: Shano put the thought into Humaira's head that she wouldn't mind them getting married. Up until that point, Humaira had never thought of Khalil like that. But after that moment, she suddenly realized she wanted that love for herself and went down a slightly negative path. Was she a bad person? Nope and she did ultimately come back and realize her bad behavior. But that's what made her a realistic character. She wasn't trying to be EVIL. I think that's what made this show for me - every character had a reason for everything. Does that mean the show was entirely great? No.....but I feel like it's hard to come across perfect dramas these days. Jackson Heights was one such perfect drama and it's become rare. Sadqay Tumhare also had a HUGE lag of 3-4 absolutely boring, irritating episodes that really tested the patience of the audience. It was only with that last episode that it came back and recovered from that. But my OVERALL opinion of the show is that it was great.

Coming to Mehram, the show started off on SUCH a POSITIVE note. The relationships were natural, the story was endearing, the issue was so real. The performances were actually really good, ESPECIALLY from Zahid Ahmed and he made more than just a mark, but he was outstanding. Where did the show go wrong? For me personally, I really had a problem with the show after we realize Hamza and Iqra were not "na mehram humsafars," but were definitely married and "mehram." It threw the story for a loop, because I thought the story would've been more plausible had they been living as devar-bhabi and realized they loved each other rather than living in a lying relationship. It really hit me in an unpleasant way when we find out that Hamza lied to Maya.....especially when Maya had gone to live with her brother in law and his children and had been entirely honest about it. Why couldn't he just have TOLD her? Instead, they both lied and she married him. On top of that, Khala kept saying "Masoom bacha, masoom bacha" as if the anger on either girl's part was unjustified! He did lie to Maya and Iqra was not being given her rights as a wife, so.....he wasn't a masoom bacha? He was being unjust!

What did bring Mehram back to being good was, again, the last episode. Everything was put right and the ending was realistic, so I really did enjoy the show overall.

I just think the negatives in Sadqay Tumhare were less than the negatives in Mehram. Also, I think Sadqay Tumhare was more of a "commercial hit" (haha, if we weigh it like we would films) and garnered more viewers, which made it more of a popular choice at the Hum Awards. I believe those awards were won based on voting?

I definitely think both Zahid and Adnan were strong contenders for the debut award and I would've been happy if Zahid had won. But I'm equally happy that Adnan won. Bottom line: Both shows were great, both are on my list of favorites for this year so far, both actors did a great job, but I do think Sadqay Tumhare had better dialogues and was overall the better show, so I'm not really broken up about it winning a mass of awards. Haha.

On that note, I'm really excited to see what Zahid's role shapes up to be in Alvida! I'm sensing a stalker side to his character.....

    1. Sadqay Tumhare was a biographical piece. I'm sorry the writer's life story failed to meet your entertainment needs...

  6. Sadqay Tumhary is a true love story. It is based on the love live of heroine Shaano and Hero Khalil. Shaano and Khalil are engaged since birth. Khalil’s mother Inayat is Shaano’s maternal aunt. Both Khalil and Shaano know about the engagement. Mahira Khan is a fabulous actress she played an awesome role in Sadqay Tumharay.

  7. Just finished seeing the drama. It tormented me in real sense. The Love shown was something like spiritual but in the end it got its share of physicality. The marriage of Khalil itself killed the love that existed once between the two protagonists. There were many contradictions in the story itself. In my view the ending would have been much better had the two been left alone, without being compelled for marriages and in that case Love would have won.

    1. The story itself had hints as to why Khalil would have married someone else and not returned to Bulgan after 1-2 years. It is obvious by the way Khalil roughly talks to his wife and how his wife respects Shano that Khalil's love for the protagonist torments his life even in marriage. And Shano herself died of depression, as she said herself that she could not live without Khalil. So, there is some consistency between the two characters with the rest of the story. I would have liked more explanation as to what happened between Khalil and his family that led to his marriage. That said, I would have wished for a less depressing and more fulfilling end. (Maybe with Maulvi Sahab)

    2. I feel the same. The way Khalil got married and comfortably moved on in life shows that the kind of spirituality , commitment and devotion was shown in their love, was a mere lie.The last episode came as a shock and the love story seems to be a very normal everyday story of casual attitudes and betrayal especially on the part of Khalil. If the circumstances didn't favour them to get married, their love could have been enough for each other for the rest of their life as was stated several times by both of them. Their getting married to different persons ruined the respect for their love and watching it seemed to be a sheer waste of time.It ended so abruptly leaving all questions unanswered.
Such a normal love story doesn't deserve to be converted into a drama when there are and have actually been true lovers in the world.

    3. I wish I could understand most of the interviews on YouTube with Khalil Ur Rehman discussing ST. I wish it had sub titles - so that I could understand a bit more behind his thinking and maybe what led him to marry his wife Ruby. Also I wish they would have shown a pic at the end of the last episode of the real Rukshana Amin (Shano) in tribute to the love of his life.

  8. Sadqe Tumhare remained interesting for the first half but then it started dragging. It got some life back when the heroine's best friend started to become a double crossing scheming person but the immense gullibility and superstitious behavior of the leading characters became very jarring. I confess I got bored and tired and just went to the last episode to see the ending. I'm afraid that turned out to be rather unsatisfactory and quite depressing.

  11. The story itself had hints (although strange) as to why Khalil would have married someone else and not returned to Bulgan after 1-2 years. Maybe due to shame of his paternal lineage or his promise to Shano, which we did not get to actually see when he left. It is obvious by the way Khalil roughly talks to his wife and how his wife respects Shano that Khalil's love for the protagonist torments his life even in marriage. And Shano herself died of depression, as she said herself before that she could not live without Khalil. So, there is a little consistency between the two characters with the rest of the story, but I would have liked more explanation as to what happened between Khalil and his family that led to his marriage. 13. I just felt bad for Shano , she was the only character who scarified a lot and lost everything
As a women I can imagine that how hard it was for her to see her mom in pain , to see her dad suffering and finding about Khalil’s wedding was a huge shock for her I can say she died that day and then her marriage could be another trauma for her.
How selfish Khalil was , he said that he buried his love when shano married
    What about his marriage?
He moved on , he has kids and happy family , he is rich and famous but shano lost everything, except Khalil she forgot everything even living
Khalil ur Rahman Sahib never talks about her and she died without Khalil
I was in trauma for a week and was weeping like a child, some stupid cultures destroyed peoples life

  17. Very sad - so many unanswered questions - I keep on feeling that there is a missing episode. I wish they showed the conversation between Khalil and Shano at their farewell and the last and final time he left Bulgan. I feel it would’ve clarified most of the unanswered questions. I too am sad that a love that was so spiritual in nature and a meeting of true souls left Khalil marrying real life wife Ruby a couple of years after his break up from Shano? Just like the many unanswered questions the question of true love can be added along with the others. What is true love when those who shared in this love married others. On the sad scale? I feel like I have a brick in my chest since I watched the last episode, just extremely sad!

  18. Has anyone tried to find a pic of Rukshana ‘Shano’ Amin - I would’ve loved to see the face of someone who had remarkable qualities and have shared a love that was so pure with her Khalil
